I believe in providing choices to students but in order to hold students accountable for their own learning each child will have a “point cycle” guide. They can generally pick and choose how they earn points, however they will learn that there are some tasks that are “must-do”.
Keep in mind that the expectation of gifted reading is to be working above and beyond minimum grade level criteria. Readers that are working AT grade level are considered “2” in gifted reading. In order to earn a “4” on the report card for gifted reading, my readers have to go WELL above and beyond high expectations.
Also note that gifted service goals include individualizing to meet student needs, so while I have general guidelines and expectations, “one size” does not fit all!
